Colney Memorial Parks

Background

EAS has been appointed by Colney Memorial Parks
Ltd. to assist in developing a number of Woodland
Burial Parks across the UK. The burial parks are set in
mature woodland and are all built on the basis of
sustainable principles. EAS was appointed to provide advice from planning to implementation for new woodland burial
parks. EAS provided infrastructure design services for
the Epping Forest Burial Park in Essex and Pitlands Wood, located in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Both these sites are now completed.

Key Issues

As the development is located within a mature forest
it is essential that all the design work is carried out
with concern for the local environment and the
dynamic nature of the forest. In addition Colney
Memorial Parks are committed to using sustainable
materials and practices where possible for all the
Woodland Park developments.

EAS Solutions

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) have been used
at both sites in various forms for dealing with surface
water runoff.

The Epping Forest Burial Park utilised a pond and
swale system, forming a continuous wetland habitat
to allow discharge to an off-site watercourse.
Additionally, cleaned foul effluent is discharged to the
SuDS system via the use of a bio-digester sewage
treatment plant.

Roads and rides within the forest have been
designed based on no-dig principles. Geogrids and
geo-composites have been utilised within the road
design to minimise excavation and damage to the
tree roots.

Materials have been specified with a mind to using
local sources where possible to reduce haulage and
increase the sustainable credentials of the site.
