Fennies Under 5’s Day Nurseries is Croydon’s leading childcare provider, with four nurseries in the borough. Fennies wishes to expand its facilities and has recently gained planning permission to do so at Addiscombe Road, and is looking to continue expanding, initially at Sanderstead.
The nurseries are located in a busy London borough and tend to have limited parking facilities. The Addiscombe Road nursery accesses directly onto the Transport for London (TfL) Road Network. Transport for London and the London Borough of Croydon were concerned about safe access and parking for the nursery when expanded from the existing 40 spaces to the proposed 104.
Expansion of the Sanderstead site has faced local concern over the volume of traffic associated with drop off and pick up of children.
Croydon Borough Council initially objected to the proposed Addiscombe Road extension on transport grounds. EAS director, Paul Silcock, was instrumental in preparation of a Transport Assessment, redesign of the parking and drop off facilities for the Addiscombe Road proposals and preparation and analysis of a detailed travel questionnaire for existing parents and staff. Paul Silcock was able to allay TfL safety fears, and agree minimal increase in parking by demonstrating that the site was highly sustainable and that new parents and staff were likely to travel to the site on foot or by public transport.
EAS are in the process of preparing a Green Travel Plan that will help to re-inforce the sustainable nature of the site. The GTP will be adapted from advice normally used for schools, but taking into account the relatively young age of the children.
