EAS provided transportation advice for the proposed extension to a Children’s Day Care Nursery in Waltham Forest, North East London.
The site was split into two sections located opposite each other along an A class road and next to a private school. The proposal was to extend the nursery on just one side of the road and stop using the section on the opposite side.
This would seem to be a benefit but the local highway authority had concerns that the overall increase in size on one side of the road and its juxtaposition to a local private school would make traffic conditions in the peak hours un-acceptable.
EAS undertook an extensive travel survey of the nursery. All existing travel movements to and from the nursery were catalogued together with all movements to and from the private school.
In addition, a travel questionnaire was prepared and handed to all staff for their completion and to gather data for parents arriving with their children.
As a result of this data a full modal share picture of travel to the site and to the adjacent private school was established and this allowed the production of a site specific Green Travel Plan which was prepared in accordance with Transport for London Guidelines.
The result of the surveys proved that increasing the size of the nursery and locating it all on one side of the road would not impact upon the adjacent school arrival and departure profile. In fact, with a very small and realistic change in travel mode, the re-development would improve traffic conditions in the immediate vicinity of the site.
The development was granted planning permission in Autumn 2009.
